About the artist
OMAR : OMALIGHT
Omar’s journey has been shaped by forces beyond his own decisions, from his environment to the unexpected turns of life. Initially studying physics and music in Lausanne, he felt a deep sense of unease that led him to abandon the conventional path and embark on an initiatory journey.
In Afghanistan, his homeland still scarred by war, he reconnected with his cultural roots, an experience that profoundly influenced his understanding of resilience and creativity. Later, in India, he discovered the transformative power of artisan work, sparking his lifelong connection with wood and light. Though these mediums were never a deliberate choice, they became the foundation of his artistic practice, which he has pursued with passion for over 30 years.
For him, creation is more than craft—it is an emotional and spiritual necessity, driven by an inner force that seeks to express something greater. This process, which he describes as both tormenting and life-giving, mirrors the innate act of creation itself.
His work is deeply rooted in the interplay between nature and emotion, reflecting his fascination with organic materials and their connection to human experience. By shaping wood into intricate forms and experimenting with the interplay of shadow and illumination, he creates pieces that evoke memory, transcendence, and the passage of time.
Through his work, the artist transcends cultural and temporal boundaries, inviting reflection on light, space, and matter. After three decades of exploration, his sculptures and installations stand as a testament to art’s power to transform both creator and viewer, making his practice not just a career but a way of life.
