THE UNIVERSE OF THE FIVE ELEMENTS BY YOYO

I. EXHIBITION INTRODUCTION

Alchemy of Poetics exhibition poster Yoyo Balagué EAST WEST SPACE Barcelona contemporary ceramic art Mediterranean

As the spring light once again gently illuminates the earth, EAST WEST SPACE is honored to present the first solo exhibition of Spanish ceramic artist Yoyo Balagué. Her works are not merely about clay and fire; they are a ritual of nature, time, and inner silence.

Born in Barcelona and raised in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, Yoyo Balagué was shaped by the Mediterranean landscape – its silence and inherent power. The wind, water, sunlight, rocks, and charred wood all became essential elements in her artistic language. She unites wood, fire, water, air and the earth beneath her feet as one, allowing these five primal forces to converse, struggle, and ultimately reconcile within each piece.

As a self-taught artist, Balagué has devoted herself to studying and experimenting with ancient ceramic techniques from around the world. Her innovative approach to pit firing is particularly striking: in her hands, this most ancient of firing methods gains new life. Fire is no longer merely a functional tool but a collaborator – leaving smoke, temperature variations, and burn marks to write unrepeatable poems on the clay surface. Those seemingly rough, mottled, and uneven textures are the most honest records of natural phenomena.

In terms of form, Balagué follows the traditional "Urdido" technique – building forms coil by coil with rolled rolls of clay. This process is slow, repetitive, and demands great patience and focus. For her, it is not mere labor but a meditative ritual. She uses her body as a medium of perception, capturing an awareness of space and movement from inner stillness, then transforming it into the growth and extension of clay. Her sculptures possess the calm of functional vessels as well as the freedom of non-functional forms, both imbued with an organic, almost breathing rhythm.

More profoundly, Balagué's work is deeply rooted in wabi-sabi philosophy. She rarely uses glaze, embracing the natural fragility of clay. Cracks, fire marks, uneven coloration – what are often seen as "imperfections" in traditional ceramics – are transformed by her into proof of natural beauty and resilience. Her work reminds us: perfection is not the truth of life; imperfection is the poetry of all existence.

This spring, we invite you to slow down – as if gazing at a stone washed by a stream, or a piece of wood kissed by flame – to experience Yoyo Balagué's five-element universe. There, matter and spirit, the human and the natural, the ancient and the present, finally become one.

II. CURATORIAL PERSPECTIVE

Curator Song Tao has dedicated his career to connecting artistic contexts between East and West. He has perceptively captured the serenity and primal intensity that emerge from Yoyo’s works, constructing a miniature “Wu Xing universe” within the industrial character of EAST WEST SPACE. Through this curatorial approach, the exhibition guides the viewer into a cross-cultural and spiritual dialogue, where matter becomes both language and presence.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

YOYO BALAGUÉ

Yoyo Balagué approaches creation as a physical and instinctive act, where the body becomes the essential tool for shaping her work. With a multidisciplinary background in art and movement, her practice is rooted in exploring intuition and spatial connection through gesture.

Since the beginning of her career, she has developed a unique artistic language in which abstraction and minimalism merge to capture the essence of the moment. Her work reflects a pursuit of the essential through direct interaction with materials such as clay, canvas, and paper. She has drawn the attention of galleries and collectors for her ability to evoke sensations beyond form.

Yoyo works in deep concentration, often with her eyes closed, allowing movement to flow freely. Her creative process is a meditation in itself, a journey toward the purity of experience. The absence of superfluous elements in her pieces reinforces her search for the fundamental, establishing a dialogue between body, material, and emptiness.

For Balagué, art is more than an object—it is a sensory experience that transforms both space and those who inhabit it. Her work invites a perception beyond the visual, fostering an intimate connection with materiality and the present moment. Each piece becomes a trace of movement, an imprint of time and energy, where gesture and matter coexist in perfect balance.

Her artistic approach extends beyond traditional mediums, embracing performance and site-specific installations that highlight the fluidity of the creative act. Through her work, she challenges the boundaries between body and space, revealing the invisible forces that shape our perception.
