ABOUT THE DESIGN
From the earliest dynasties to contemporary design, the screen has occupied a unique place in Asian culture — not merely as a functional divider, but as a poetic mediator between worlds. It is a threshold, a silent narrator that guides the flow of the visible and the concealed. In traditional Chinese interiors, the screen defines and redefines space through layers of shadow, suggestion and intimacy. It shields and reveals, protects and invites, creating a choreography between body, movement and architecture.
X Screen emerges from this lineage but departs from it with radical clarity. Chen Darui does not recreate the classical screen; he reinterprets its essence through the logic of connection — the core philosophy behind his X Series. For him, every object is born from the meeting of forces, the joining of points across time, matter and perception. In X Screen, this idea becomes architectural:
a single structural language unfolding infinitely across the X, Y and Z axes, expanding like a living organism that grows through its own geometry.
The metallic mesh echoes the texture of ancient silk screens, yet its translucency belongs to the present. The Champagne Gold structure recalls traditional craftsmanship, while its modular logic speaks the language of engineering, digital simulation and the AI age. Through this tension, X Screen becomes a bridge between eras — the past’s sensitivity and the present’s intelligence intertwined.
As with all works in the X Series, X Screen is more than a functional object.
It is a structural meditation, a sculptural system capable of expanding endlessly, adapting, learning and evolving. It represents the most refined expression of Chen Darui’s creative philosophy: that beauty emerges not from isolated forms, but from the relationships that bind them.

About the artist
CHEN DARUI
Chen Darui is one of the most innovative voices in contemporary Chinese design. As a designer, artist, and founder of Maxmarko, CHEN DARUI, and puwuu, he has spent over two decades exploring the relationship between design, art, and materiality, merging craftsmanship, technology, and conceptual experimentation in each of his pieces. His approach challenges traditional furniture conventions, elevating functionality to a level where the object becomes an artistic discourse.
Trained at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in China, Chen Darui has developed a unique approach that blends innovation with respect for tradition, constantly exploring new design forms while preserving the cultural richness that defines his work. His experimentation with industrial processes and artisanal aesthetics has led him to redefine the use of materials such as wood and metal, transforming them into pieces that transcend design and become functional art.
His work is based on the concept of "harmony in diversity" (和而不同), a philosophy that balances tradition and modernity, art and function, individuality and cultural context. Each of his creations reflects on the relationship between humans and objects, and between objects and their time, using design as a tool to question and reinterpret contemporary reality.
Throughout his career, Chen Darui has received multiple design awards and has participated in major international fairs and exhibitions, including Milan Design Week, Maison & Objet Paris, and Design Shanghai. His work has been recognized for its ability to break barriers between art and furniture, establishing a new language at the intersection of design and aesthetic experimentation.
