China Chair | CHEN DARUI

€0.00

China Chair by Chen Darui is a contemporary reinterpretation of traditional Chinese seating, translated into a sculptural, sharply geometric object. Crafted in deep black wood, the chair unfolds through angular planes and intersecting lines, merging cultural memory with architectural precision.
The design deconstructs classical proportions, rebuilding them through an expressive silhouette that feels both ancient and radically modern. Each facet acts like a fragment of a larger spatial idea — a study of balance, asymmetry, and structural clarity.
Despite its sculptural presence, the chair maintains functional integrity, offering a grounded yet dynamic seating experience.
China Chair stands as a collectible furniture piece that bridges craftsmanship and conceptual design.

ABOUT THE DESIGN

The China Chair originated from the “demolition” of the concept of western modernism starting from function. It is not for the material structure of things, but the subversion of people’s existing concepts and cognition, showing the simplest state with abundant structures. It is not difficult to dismantle the inherent material structure, but it is not easy to dismantle the inherent concept cognition.

The design of China Chair reflects the characteristics of this era. Design was born from ‘demolition’ in an era of continuous reconstruction. Dismantling the functional concept of modernism, giving the functional structure an innovative life, and exposing the structure are both challenges to aesthetics and the result of aesthetics itself. It looks like a sculpture but extremely light. Too much is too little, demolition is reconstruction.

About the artist

CHEN DARUI

Chen Darui is one of the most innovative voices in contemporary Chinese design. As a designer, artist, and founder of Maxmarko, CHEN DARUI, and puwuu, he has spent over two decades exploring the relationship between design, art, and materiality, merging craftsmanship, technology, and conceptual experimentation in each of his pieces. His approach challenges traditional furniture conventions, elevating functionality to a level where the object becomes an artistic discourse.

Trained at the Central Academy of Arts and Crafts in China, Chen Darui has developed a unique approach that blends innovation with respect for tradition, constantly exploring new design forms while preserving the cultural richness that defines his work. His experimentation with industrial processes and artisanal aesthetics has led him to redefine the use of materials such as wood and metal, transforming them into pieces that transcend design and become functional art.

His work is based on the concept of "harmony in diversity" (和而不同), a philosophy that balances tradition and modernity, art and function, individuality and cultural context. Each of his creations reflects on the relationship between humans and objects, and between objects and their time, using design as a tool to question and reinterpret contemporary reality.

Throughout his career, Chen Darui has received multiple design awards and has participated in major international fairs and exhibitions, including Milan Design Week, Maison & Objet Paris, and Design Shanghai. His work has been recognized for its ability to break barriers between art and furniture, establishing a new language at the intersection of design and aesthetic experimentation.

At EAST WEST SPACE, we share his innovative vision and take pride in being the space where his work comes to life in Barcelona, offering exclusive access to his most representative creations.
