A GUSTO CHAIR

Contemporary A Gusto chair by Valeria Montero, blending design and comfort at EAST WEST SPACE Barcelona.

PRODUCT: Chair

DIMENSIONS: W50 cm x D78 cm x H78 cm

MATERIAL: Solid cypress wood and steel

“If the chair has always been thought of as an object of comfort and rest, why does my back hurt so much after sitting in one? Is it punishing me? What is it punishing me for? If it's the chair that makes me stay in one position for hours with a false sense of rest.
This piece is the materialization of the anti-static and the analog-kinetic. Inspired by wood therapy tools used for massage, which help relieve pain and improve blood circulation. This chair is the chair to rest from the other chair.”

— Valeria Montero

Valeria Montero Torres (1996) is a Mexican industrial designer, graduated from Universidad Iberoamericana. Her work is driven by an exploration of materials such as polymers, wood, and agave membrane, which she transforms into both sculptural and utilitarian objects. Valeria’s approach merges the functional aspects of industrial design with an artistic sensibility, creating pieces that are innovative, practical, and visually striking.

In 2018, Valeria joined the Común design collective, where she collaborated with other creatives to push the boundaries of material exploration and design. This experience allowed her to develop a deep understanding of collective design processes and the impact of innovative design in everyday life.

Her work was first widely recognized in 2019 when she exhibited at Inédito and the Abierto Mexicano de Diseño, two major design events in Mexico. These exhibitions showcased her unique approach to combining aesthetics with functionality, earning her a reputation as a designer with a keen eye for contemporary trends and sustainability.

Between 2020 and 2024, Valeria worked as Studio Manager for renowned designer Fernando Laposse, where she gained extensive experience managing high-profile design projects. This role allowed her to expand her professional skill set while deepening her understanding of the global design scene.

Currently based in Mexico City, Valeria continues to develop her career, focusing on sustainable design practices and new materials. Her work reflects her commitment to creating designs that are not only functional and beautiful but also environmentally conscious and innovative.
